The American Apologist

Why do so many actors feel the need to comment publicly on social issues? Is it because they are over-exposed to the liberal mantra prevalent in LA/NY? Is it because their careers are wholly-based upon pretending to be relevant (in various character roles) and they’re looking for something in reality which makes them actually relevant? Is it because their elite lifestyles have spoiled them into thinking they are superior to the “Average Joe”?

I remember reading about the Golden Age of Hollywood when studios made stars out of actors and virtually nothing was allowed to tanish the star’s public image for fear it would hurt sales at the box office. Ironically, I equate being an actor with being a waiter. Both are depended upon the attitudes of the audience for their money. An actor who shuns your conservative values is a little like a waiter who passes gas at your table. Everyone knows a waiter may have gas (and an actor may be liberal), but we don’t want it “in our face”.

Today’s actors are different. Many express public opinon about such social issues as animal rights, human rights, foreign policy, and social reform. Take, for instance, this comment about Vice-President Cheney from Alec Baldwin which was posted on The Huffington Post on Feb 17, 2006:

Cheney is a terrorist. He terrorizes our enemies abroad and innocent citizens here at home indiscriminately. Who ever thought Harry Whittington would be the answer to America’s prayers. Finally, someone who might get that lying, thieving Cheney into a courtroom to answer some direct questions.

I read some of the comments to his “article” and this one stood out:

America is starting to get it in spite of our right wing media. We liberals are always way out front on issues, although we’re tagged as left wing loonies. Funny how we’re usually correct, it just takes time for the rest to catch up.

That seems to sum up the liberal mindset — “we’re smart and you’re not”. It is the only explanation. They see the need for government programs from prenatal care to social security in order to “take care” of the poor ignorant masses.

It also explains why they glorify the “continental lifestyle” (i.e.- why anything European is superior to America). If you think about it, Europe is historically based upon kingdoms, where elite royalty controls the destiny of the peasants. Most actors seem to equate stardom with royalty. Euro-socialism is also founded on the notion that a few elite leaders can decide how and what the common worker needs.

If you want my opinion (and you must since you’re here), Baldwin’s comments are just another liberal fart in the face of a conservative America.

Alvis “Buck” Owens, legendary country and western singer, died Saturday March 25, 2006 at his home in Bakersfield, California at the age of 76. On the music scene, Owens was famous for creating a unique country sound in the 50’s and 60’s called the “Bakersfield sound”.

As a kid in the 60’s and 70’s, I knew Buck Owens for his co-hosting the television show Hee-Haw with Roy Clark. Although it only lasted on CBS for 1 season (as a replacement for the Smothers Brothers Show in 1969), it was a big hit with rural America and ran in syndication until 1992, although Buck Owens left after the 1986 season. I fondly remember Hee-Haw with it’s varied cast including: Grandpa Jones (a great bango player), Minnie Pearl, George Lindsey (a.k.a. “Goober” from The Andy Griffith Show), Archie Campbell, Barbi Benton, Misty Rowe, Junior Samples and, of course, Gunilla Hutton as “Nurse Goodbody” (a.k.a. “Billie Joe” on the earlier TV series Petticoat Junction).

On March 20, 2006, the Boston Globe had an unsigned editorial (meaning it came from the editorial staff) citing gun problems in Boston . The final paragraph is telling…

The underlying causes of gun violence in Boston are complex, and the solutions elusive. While authorities sort those out, it makes sense to attack the problem at the supply side.

Yeah, typical of the liberal media. We can’t control the criminals or the poor socio-economic conditions in Boston, so let’s control the guns… WRONG! Put the criminals, and this includes the straw purchasers, in jail and the problem will go away. End of story.
